Ballybofey & Stranolar Golfer Tony Griffin became the first golfer to win the West Coast Challenge back to back in what is one of the top golfing tournaments in the North West of Ireland and indeed in the whole of Ireland.

The Tournament took place from Monday Sept 3rd to Thursday 6th September inclusive. It is played over the following four courses; BundoranGC, Donegal/Murvagh GC, Strandhill  GC and Enniscrone GC .Competitors from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France UK and Ireland took part in the competition. They thoroughly enjoyed the courses, weather, scenery and hospitality in the area and for the first year ever we had a local man score back to back victories.

This was Tony’s second year to play in the tournament and his local knowledge of the courses proved vital for the week. He laid down his intention early with a score of 44 stableford points on Day 1 in Murvagh. Day 2 saw him travel to Strandhill when again he proved consistent with another great score of 39 points. Day 3 Tony played Enniscrone GC and scored 33 points.

On day 4 the leader board was tightly packed with only 6 points dividing the top four players. Tony was in first place with 116 points, Thurles man Donal Hurley was lying second on 112 points, Ber Murphy Carlow GC was joint third with Johnny Kavanagh (Castletroy GC) on 110 points.

Tony was playing Bundoran GC a course he was very familiar with and this proved a definite advantage, he scored 37 points giving him a overall total of 153 stableford points 6 points over second placed Donal Hurley Thurles GC.

Along with his team mates Alaistair Henderson and Sean Carlin (Ballybofey & Stranolar GC) they secured  second overall in the team event.

Congratulations Tony on your wonderful successful week of golf.
